ArTrujillo Gallery presents: Contemporary Art from Oaxaca – Prints &
Paintings on Paper
In a landmark exhibit, the distinctive ArTrujillo Gallery is proud to present to
the public a valuable and intriguing selection of work from one of the world's
most lively centers of art creation – Oaxaca, Mexico.
Oaxaca (“wa-HA-ka”) – few cities hold so much meaning for anyone
interested in contemporary Latin American art. Birthplace and home to two famous
masters of Mexican painting and graphic art, Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991), and
Francisco Toledo (1940 - ), Oaxaca has been a center of civilization for
thousands of years. Sun-drenched and fragrant, a marvelous mix of indigenous
cultures blended with Spanish colonialism and a modern imagination, it's a place
of mythic encounters which invigorate all the arts springing forth from this
rich land.
Francisco Toledo's work, for example, may show rabbits, frogs, monkeys, insects
and other creatures joining in erotic battles, and Death is ever-present. His
palette uses colors of the earth, from a place where the rocks themselves are
green, red and blue. Toledo is world-famous, both as an artist and as a cultural
philanthropist who has founded and funds art schools, museums and cultural
centers throughout the region of Oaxaca. ArTrujillo will show several prime
examples of his graphic art, including his handmade kites.
Gustavo Lira, renowned muralist and painter, is a native-Oaxacan transplanted to
Northeast Minneapolis who draws deeply from the roots of indigenous culture to
empower his masterful images. The eagle, the fish, the beating heart and the
beating drum all have resonance in Lira's work, whether on a monumental wall, a
canvas, or a sheet of handmade paper.
Reyes Gomez is a long-time associate of ArTrujillo Gallery – a member of the
mountain-dwelling Guacamaya tribe, with a world-class art education from Austria
and Italy, who can often be found in the Plaza de los Artistas in Oaxaca. His
paintings on traditional amate paper, and his most recent steel plate etchings,
bring to life characters based on the pre-Hispanic Mixtec Codex books - ancient,
contemporary and timeless – all at once.
El Taller Piedra Azul (The Blue Stone Workshop) teaches linoleum-cut techniques
to rural children, and is a testament to the ongoing importance of printmaking
in Oaxacan art. Editions of student prints, full of imaginative and charm, will
be on sale at ArTrujillo Gallery, to help fund this and other projects of La
Causa de Cultura, an arts organization founded and run by Oaxacan-born artist
(and former Minnesotan) Patricia Mendoza.
Along with traditional handcrafted artesanìa from southern Mexico, photos of
Oaxaca by Minnesota visual artist Jim Grafsgaard, and work by other guest
artists, this special exhibit promises to educate and enrich the public's
perception of the expressive power and beauty of art.
ArTrujillo Gallery is located at 349 13th Ave. NE in Minneapolis,
next-door to the historic Ritz Theater. The public is invited to attend the
exhibit opening, Friday May 8, 2009 from 5pm until midnight. Regular gallery
