MEGAN BELL & LUIS CHAMIZO
During the deep freeze and slush that can be Minneapolis in winter, the passion and heat of the arts can be our salvation. ArTrujillo Gallery specializes in affordable local and international art, much of it with a rich tropical flavor which will help your home and workspaces feel sunny and celebratory.
Painter Megan Bell and sculptor Luis Chamizo are featured in the newest exhibit at ArTrujillo Gallery opening Saturday February 12 and running thru March 13, 2005.
Megan Bell is a self-taught artist who grew up in the Twin Cities. Ms. Bell’s work is colorful, playful and energetic, and her recent paintings include unconventional portraits of the characters that travel through her life.
Luis Chamizo is originally from Cuba, now living in Austin MN. His carvings in basswood, mahogany and other fine woods describe graceful human figures with a fine finish and an attractive sense of light and shadow.
Also featured in the Gallery are a number of other local artists, many with close ties to Mexico and Latin America. Luis Fitch, Rigel Sauri, Alejandro Trujillo, and Gustavo Lira are some of the well-known names represented. ArTrujillo is packed full of artistic alternatives, and is an entertaining stop on any art viewer’s list.
The opening for the exhibit “Megan Bell & Luis Chamizo” runs from 5pm to 11pm on Saturday February 12th. The public is invited to meet the artists and join in a fun-filled evening of live music, great company, food and drink.

MAIN$TREAM:
AN ATYPICAL LOOK AT POP CULTURE ART
November 15, 2003
Seismic waves emitted by popular culture art forums like graffiti
walls, comic books, gig posters, and the web rock ArTrujillo Gallery in
November. Delivering a sentiment of nonconformity, over 20 local artists
twist, bend, and puncture holes in the art world with an intriguing slant of
the artistic road less-traveled. Thrashing the ridicule and judgment often
projected by a typically mainstream art culture, this collection fearlessly
exhibits a brilliant display of illustration, paint, print, sculpture and
multimedia with its middle finger held high. Unapologetically disturbing,
deliberately hilarious, and ultimately thought-provoking, MAIN$TREAM is a
wicked array of some of the most stunning visual artistry found right here
in the Twin Cities.

Las Divas! The women of ArTrujillo Gallery present their newest creations
Women of talent, style, vision and determination – these are the Divas. They are youthful at any age. They are daring and demanding. They are a sisterhood and a social club. And they are about to grace us all with their art in an exhibit opening May 31st at ArTrujillo Multicultural Art Studios and Gallery in south Minneapolis.
The Divas include Melina Borton, a flamenco dancer formerly of Chicago who is now turning her talents for rhythm and performance to paint. Tara LaPorte is a Florida transplant who gives image to her hopes and fears with shards of tile and bead mosaics. Karlee Mariel, just in from Puerto Rico, is spinning her classical art training into expressionist self-portrayals that boldly hit the bulls-eye. Sarah Stone’s classicism is twisted by her passion for punk rock graphic art and comes out free-form, verbal, angry and true. Brenda VonAhsen is a fiercely intelligent master of the human form and landscape, which in her work become a spiritual veil for us to peer through. A dozen other guest Divas fill out the exhibit with artworks that are sweet, street, savory and sensational.
This exhibit opens Saturday May 31st with an evening artist’s reception from 6-10pm, followed by a late night celebration of music, dance, refreshments and fun – free and open to the public.
ArTrujillo is a unique “house of culture” located at 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis. The Gallery is open to the public daily from 3pm – 8pm, and by appointment. For further information, call (612) 821-9076 or see www.artrujillo.com.

LOCAL ROCK MUSIC GETS A WORLD BEAT BOOST with HIJOS DEL MAIZ.
Mexico City, Dakar and Sao Paulo will meet Minnesota head-on when the original funk rock of Hijos del Maíz, plays Saturday February 15th at the new ArTrujillo Gallery, 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis. With members from Mexico, Senegal and Brazil plus years of experienced talent, this band promises to blow the snow and heat up the scene.
Hijos del Maíz translates to “Children of the Corn” – a reference to the Aztec’s most sacred plant, and mother of us all. Like maíz, these diverse musicians believe, music is food for the soul. They aim to give our souls a feast.
David Rodriguez, the band’s guitarist and leader, has fast fingers and solos like a warrior-priest. He learned his craft copying Mexico’s 80’s and 90’s rock’n’roll – groups like El Tri and the Jaguares, who both played the Twin Cities last year. But he jumps into a different mode with Hijos del May, and now spices his licks with a funky world beat.
The unique rhythm section adds curry and flurry with Elias from Mexico on drums, Mamadu from Senegal on bass guitar and Eliezer from Brazil on congas. Together they have over 50 years of performing experience and endless variety in their mix. And finally, Cristina from Mexico contributes “sabor” with her sweet and sensual vocals.
The band has played numerous clubs and alternative venues over the past year, but this is their debut at the new ArTrujillo Gallery. For fans and new listeners, Hijos del Maíz will open your ears.
The public is invited to this all age’s event. For more information, please call 612-821-9076 or

Mexican Human Rights Activist to Address Murder Epidemic and the Search for Justice for Women Victims of Violence in Juarez, Mexico (Chicago-March, 2003) A human rights activist pursuing justice for more than 350 women murdered in Juarez, Mexico, will be in Beloit, Stevens Point and Milwaukee, WI, Chicago, IL and Minneapolis, MN and other Midwest sites
March 27-April 5, 2003. Rosario Acosta, co-founder and spokeswoman of Nuestras Hijas de Regreso a Casa (May Our Daughters Return Home), will accompany screenings of "Señorita Extraviada" ("Missing Young Woman"),
Lourdes Portillo's award-winning documentary on the Juarez murder epidemic.
Since 1993, more than 300 women have been murdered in the border town of Juarez. Most bodies are found in the desert surrounding the city and have shown signs of sexual violence. Ninety show marks of ritual sacrifice. In
addition, four hundred women have disappeared. Despite the disturbing number of murders/rapes in Juarez, officials' responses have been marked by denial, bungled investigations and corruption. In nearly ten years, prosecutors in
Juarez have yet to win a conviction in any of the murder/rape cases. Ms. Acosta, a life-long resident of the state of Chihuahua, began her involvement after her niece, Cynthia Rocio Acosta, was abducted, raped and murdered in 1998. Ms. Acosta began "Nuestras Hijas" to assist victims'families, pressure local authorities and present the murder/rape cases before international human rights tribunals. She recently testified before the Interamerican Commission on Human Rights, a division of the
Organization of the American States, based in Washington, DC. Señorita Extraviada documents the struggles of victim's families and local
activists against corrupt police. The film paints a disturbing portrait of Ciudad Juarez, NAFTA's "City of the Future" and home to 500 foreign-owned
assembly plants called "maquiladoras." Mexican laborers, mostly women, work 12-hour shifts in well-kept, US-owned factories for $4-8 a day. After shift, workers return to shantytowns of sewage, danger and squalor. Families
with three full time wage earners can't afford decent housing. The film uncovers an economic system that devalues women's work and women's lives.
The Mexico Solidarity Network organized Ms. Acosta's visit and film screenings. The Mexico Solidarity Network is a national coalition of 90 organizations supporting struggles for human rights, democracy and economic justice on both sides of the US-Mexico border.
All events will be translated from Spanish to English.

ArTrujillo Studio Gallery is an artist collective named for the group’s visionary leader Alejandro Trujillo. Three and a half years ago he saw the need for a space where artists could create freely, without many rules or restrictions. “We are open to everybody who wants to create. We have professionals who sell paintings all over the world, and we have others who are just beginning to make art. By working together we keep our costs down and we learn from each other, plus we make bigger and better art, and show it to more people,” Trujillo explains.
Proving his point, ArTrujillo members have been busy non-stop -- creating murals, art events, exhibits and installations all around Minnesota and the region. Members have shown at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, at CreArte Latino Art Center, in dozens of area galleries and businesses, as well as at ArTrujillo Gallery itself. The collective has grown to more than a dozen artists with international connections, including a strong Latino presence. Guest artists from New York, Chicago, Latin America and Europe have also been represented. ArTrujillo’s energy is one of the keys to the ongoing cultural revitalization of East Lake Street. “We’ve been growing and growing, and finally, with the support of our landlord and patron for the arts, we were able to find more space,” says Trujillo.
Now, after months of preparation and hard work, ArTrujillo artists are ready to officially open their new Studio Gallery with a 24-hour open house and fiesta. This “New Day in the Life of ArTrujillo” begins at noon on Saturday January 25th and continues until noon Sunday – with a full schedule of art, performances, music, dancing, and refreshments.
Jim Grafsgaard, a painter and ArTrujillo’s artistic director, describes the New Day: “During the afternoon we will start with a family-friendly atmosphere, soft music, interactive wall painting, soft drinks and snacks. Then, around 8pm, the music goes up, the party gets going and it keeps on going! We’ll have the DJ WAMM, Blue Sky Victory band, Attempted Bender, Dan & Jake, Americo Juan and the Dramatics, mariachi singers, punk bands, jazz musicians, salsa and world music…something for everyone, and anyone who wants to join in. And of course walls and walls and walls of new paintings and art work.”

The Art of Flamenco
Paintings by Jim Grafsgaard
Currently on exhibit at La Bodega Tapas Bar, 3005 Lyndale Avenue South in Minneapolis, is a series of oil paintings exploring the images of Spanish Flamenco. The paintings were created by local artist Jim Grafsgaard while he was living in Sevilla (Seville), between January and September of 2002.
Grafsgaard, a painter for over 20 years, made his first visit to Spain last year during a backpacking tour of Europe. Arriving in Sevilla, the capital of Andalucia where Flamenco originates, he was quickly captivated by the intensity and passion of the people. “Like many artists before me,” says Grafsgaard, “ when I began to experience Flamenco culture I found myself fascinated. Flamenco draws you in.”
“In Sevilla, Flamenco can be found everywhere -- in taverns and bars, on theater stages, at fiestas, in people’s homes, and at celebrations which draw thousands. I heard and saw Flamenco live indoors, on the street, on TV, and on the radio with historical commentary. I learned from aficionados, became friends with performers, and began to study the dance forms and lyrics.”
The result is this series of paintings, offered with humble respect as an artistic homage to the men and women who make Flamenco a vital and expressive force.
The exhibit opens January 16, 2003 with a public reception from 7-9pm, and will remain on display through February.

For more information, please call 612-821-9076

Paintings of Steve Capiz at CreArte
Latino Arts Center and Museum Minneapolis, MN
August 11 - September 1, 2001.
Opening reception is Saturday August 11th, from 7-10pm at CreArte Latino Arts Center and Museum located at 4137 Bloomington Av S. in Minneapolis.
Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday 12-5pm. For more information call CreArte at 612-728-5723.
Steve Capiz paints in an energetic contemporary style with strong colors, gestural streaks and atmospheric overlays. His work often reflects experiences from his childhood, life-long friends, and his world travels as an adult. He is a masterful painter, with strong influences from his former mentor, Southwestern artist Veloy Vigil. Capiz's images draw deeply from his Mexican-American roots, but with a worldly modernist attitude, infused with the distinct flavor of a little-known corner of old St Paul.
Mr. Capiz grew up in St Paul as a member of one of the first three Mexican-American families in the city. He recalls his childhood days living among Mexican, Jewish and Lebanese immigrant families as part of the long-gone River Flats community. There a storefront church adorned with
Catholic saints stood next to neighborhood synagogues, kids played frisbee-style with dried bagels and tortillas and swam the Mississippi in summer. This was an economically poor but culturally rich barrio, from which emerged many creative and
curious youngsters who today count among the elite of local arts and business people.
As a child, Steve would build models of WWII fighter planes and ships from whatever scraps and debris he found. This led to an interest in sculpture and art that blossomed in his adult years. Today, Capiz Studio is in the historic Northern Artists Warehouse -- just blocks from Steve's childhood home.
CreArte Latino Arts Center and Museum is located at 4137 Bloomington Av South in Minneapolis - a mile south of the Mercado Central on Bloomington Avenue. In this new location, CreArte shares a building with El Colegio, a charter school for Spanish speaking high school students. CreArte is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting Latino art and artists. This is the fifth show CreArte has mounted this year, leading to its renowned Day of the Dead exhibition and ceremony in the month of November.
PATRICIA MENDOZA COMMISSIONED FOR OFRENDAS AT
THE MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ARTS
AND AT CREARTE LATINO ARTS CENTER
In late-breaking news, ArTrujillo painter and sculptor Patricia Mendoza has
been commissioned by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts to create an Ofrenda
for Day of the Dead this year -- the only local artist to be awarded this
honor. Her design includes a 7-foot high "skeleton chair" made of paper
mache' and wood, surrounded with handmade flowers, food, candles and other
memorial objects. The ofrenda is homage to Mendoza's father, who passed
away this year and is remembered with affection, his photo seated on the
oversized chair as a metaphor for his grand spirit. Traditionally, the
spirits of those recently departed return on "El Dia de los Muertos" on
their way to the after-life, and partake of the gifts left by relatives as offerings.
The Art Institute is located at 2400 3 Av S in Minneapolis. Mendoza's
ofrenda will be on display from October 31 - November 30, 2001.
Patricia Mendoza has also been chosen to participate in this year's "El Dia
de Los Muertos" exhibition at CreArte Latino Arts Center and Museum, along
with five other Latino artists. Her design at CreArte will be a homage to
artists of the past, with a central relief sculpture paying homage to the
famous Mexican folk artist Guadalupe Posada. The CreArte exhibit runs from
November 1 - December 15, 2001 and includes many related events and
celebrations, including a candle-lit procession the evening of November 3rd.

Featuring a solo exhibit by
Salvador Espejo Benitez (Frijolito)
Master of the Little Bean
Oct. 11 – Nov. 18, 2001
SALVADOR ESPEJO BENITEZ
Maestro Frijolito: Master of the Little Bean
Salvador Espejo Benitez, who is currently exhibiting through December 2nd
in the Minneapolis Institute of Art's Minnesota Artists Gallery as one of
the "Frontera Lake Street" artists, is affectionately known to his fellow
artists as "Maestro Frijolito" which translates as "Master of the Little
Bean".
Concurrent with the "Frontera" show, Benitez is exhibiting a large selection
of his miniatures - scenes of Minnesota and Mexico painted on beans, leaves,
woodchips and other tiny surfaces - in a solo show called "Maestro
Frijolito: Master of the Little Bean" at ArTrujillo Studio Gallery, now
through November 18, 2001. Salvador Benitez is a prolific and enthusiastic
artist, whose artistic home in the USA is ArTrujillo.
By birth his home is Morelos, Mexico, where he began painting miniatures as
a way to earn money for school. Following training as an Agricultural
Engineer he continued painting, mastering the tiny format with a flair for
color and energetic description. Benitez has had more than 40 solo
exhibits, and is renowned in his native state.
The artist prices his tiny paintings very reasonably, and presents them in
small decorative frames and on tiny easels, with the wish that each will
find an appreciative home. Landscapes, wildlife scenes, seascapes, ranching
and historic scenes are among his well-loved subjects.
ArTrujillo Studio Gallery is home to a collective of artists from Latino,
European-American, African-American, Arabic and other cultures - the group
includes painters, sculptors, photographers, designers, musicians, poets and
all types of creative artists. Life-long professionals and beginning
students are often found working side-by-side on group projects and
individual artworks, as well as producing public events. In the 18 months
of existence ArTrujillo members have shown all over the Twin Cities in
non-profit galleries, corporations, open studio events, at museums and even
in the street for Cinco de Mayo!
ArTrujillo is located in the basement of the International Bazaar at 3 Av S.
and E. Lake St, just 6 blocks south of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
Gallery hours are usually noon-8pm 7 days/week, but those planning to visit

European-American and African-American painters, sculptors and designers based in South Minneapolis.

The result is a vigorous sampling of ArTrujillo artists. This an extraordinarily diverse group, and each artist have a story and unique vision to share. There are progressive abstractions (Alejandro Trujillo) and punk-anarchist paintings (Américo Juan) with roots in urban Mexico.

"EL AMARILLO DE ARTRUJILLO"
Alejandro Trujillo paintings at ArTrujillo Gallery
On Saturday April 21st a new month-long exhibit of paintings "EL AMARILLO DE ARTRUJILLO", opens at the ArTrujillo Studio-Gallery, 301 East Lake Street Suite 01 in Minneapolis. Featured will be recent artwork by the gallery founder, Alejandro Trujillo, and other guest artists.
Trujillo is best known in the upper Midwest as a muralist, and former president of the Latino Artists Group. His murals can be found in churches, businesses and schools around Minnesota, including on the outdoor wall of the International Bazaar where ArTrujillo Gallery is located.
Trujillo's new paintings take a stylistic leap from the straightforward naturalism of his public work. With bravura and intense color he wipes, sprays and drips paint to render patterns and lines reminiscent of Jackson Pollock (who, Trujillo reminds us, was pushed toward freedom of expression by contact with the Mexican master David Siqueiros). The surprise in Trujillo's work is how the abstract loops, lines and sweeps of color resolve into emotive images of Mexican peasants, lovers, families and domestic animals. The artist obviously respects the power of the common characters that emerge: the bearers of wood and water, those who suffer under the sun, the grandmothers who care for generations of kids, the little dog (perro picudo) of well-mixed breed. This is Action Painting with a social conscience.
Trujillo developed his sympathy for others at a young age. Born in Guadalajara Mexico, a city renowned for its murals and artistic traditions, Alejandro found an early mentor in his uncle Salvador. Encouraged to study philosophy, literature and history as well as art, young Alejandro also recognized the injustices of poverty and privilege in the world. First as an activist, then as an educator, and now as an artist, organizer and U.S. citizen, Trujillo continues to serve those the system does not. For disaffected Latino youth, for example, Alejandro and his compatriots at ArTrujillo provide a wide range of art opportunities to build confidence, pride and positive potential.
ArTrujillo Gallery itself is a model of egalitarianism. One finds folk-art miniatures, naive welded sculptures, and southwest style Santos next to 21st century expressionism, international abstracts and visionary figurative work. A worldwide cultural sampling is evident too. The artists work out of traditions from across the U.S., Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific Rim.
As a special event this month, ArTrujillo is exhibiting the abstract landscapes of Dutch painter Hennie Lenders. These brightly colored images of the Netherlands are "painted like my country, slow floating waters making rivers framed by man."
"EL AMARILLO DE ARTRUJILLO" opens with a reception Saturday, April 21st from 6pm -10pm, followed by a late-night party featuring DJ WAMM, local Mexican food, various poets and other performers. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibit runs through June 20th. Regular gallery hours are noon-8pm daily. To confirm hours, or for information on other upcoming exhibits, events and classes please call 612-821-9076, artrujillo3@cs.com or jimgrafsgaard@prodigy.net .

opening reception and party
March 17, 2001 6pm - 1am
ArTrujillo Studio-Gallery at 301 East Lake Street Suite 01 in Minneapolis is proud to present a new exhibit of paintings -- “SANTEROS” by Chicano activist Ray Roybal, opening Saturday, March 17 6pm - 1am and running through April 15, 2001.
Ray Roybal blends traditional images of Chicano culture with icons from the struggle for equality in America. With the awareness of an educator and a progressive visionary, he depicts angels, prophets and messiahs in a modern day context. The angel Gabriel bears the face of John Lennon – Saint Peter becomes Martin Luther King, Jr. – Christ is a martyr with dark skin.
Born and raised in New Mexico in the 1940’s, Ray’s childhood roots were entwined with the Mexican Catholic traditions of spirituality in art. In the late 1950’s and early 60’s, as a young artist in the San Francisco bay area of California, Roybal immersed himself in the politics and dissent of the day. He lived in North Beach when Beat culture was first blossoming, and saw the cultural revolution of the hippies firsthand. At the same time, civil rights became the hot issue in America. Chicano solidarity was being forged in the furnace of protest and political unrest.
Roybal has developed his creativity as a weapon for reforming a conformist attitude. Currently, Roybal works from his home and studio in North Minneapolis, where he also runs his business- Minnesota Cultural Media. Besides painting, he publishes political commentary in the form of cartoons for Insight News and Latino Midwest newspapers. He was one of the founders of the Chicano Studies department at the University of Minnesota, and works to bring art into the process of local community development. Roybal has exhibited in cities all over the USA, including Santa Fe, Taos, San Francisco, New York and throughout the Midwest.
“SANTEROS” will be accompanied by a selection of work by other ArTrujillo artists including Alejandro Trujillo, Jim Grafsgaard, Haider Al-Amery's, Jimmy Longoria Coyote 4 , Leila Habashi, Meg Novak, Noe Rivera, Little Al, Terry Morris, Salvador Espejo and Hennie Lenders.
The opening reception is Saturday, March 17 from 6pm-1am, followed by an all-out all-night party at ArTrujillo Studio Gallery featuring DJ WAMM, Pancho Villa & Chiapas Restaurants, plus various poets and performers. The event is free and open to the public.
